There's more than one, two or even ten ways to make a print, but have you imagined steamrolling it?! The Martha Street Studio in Winnipeg hosts an annual Steam Roller Print Fesitval. High school students, community groups, and artists from across Winnipeg create large linoleum carvings prior to the festival. On the day of the festival the carvings are inked and printed with a steamroller.

Another fun idea... printing monotypes by skateboarding and breakdancing. During the Imagine RIT Innovation and Creativity Festival at the Rochester Institute of Technology, big monotype plates were inked up and participants skateboared, breakdanced and steamrolled to create some neat prints!

If you find yourself making some prints today, don't forget to have fun with it!

Still trying to figure out the "guerrilla art thing"? Take a read through Keri Smith's attempt to simplify it, along with her list of some basic formats and potential subject matter. Smith also has a book (which I've seen in stores, but have yet to personally read) entitled "The Guerilla Art Kit".

And you can't investigate guerrilla art without looking into the Guerrilla Girls, who call themselves "feminist masked avengers in the tradition of anonymous do-gooders like Robin Hood, Wonder Woman and Batman".

After flooding my brain with guerrilla-this-and-that, I'm left wondering if the At-Arts "One Night Shows" truly fall into the realm of "guerrilla"? They have the potential to, I just don't think we've pushed them far enough yet... I'm not suggesting something overly radical, illegal or anything like that, but we should try and step a little further away from the traditional exhibition. We've started to and I think that each time we host these type of events, we'll get further and further from tradition and closer to guerrilla.

Embrace it and check out Guerrilla Gardening, which is the attempt to reclaim land from neglect or misuse and assign a new purpose to it by planting a garden. Have you heard of this before? Am I the last to know? It sounds like a wonderful idea. I've been aware of the push to develop more and more community flower and veggie gardens, but this takes it a step further. And here's some tips if you're interested in getting into this yourself. Oh, yes, there is indeed Guerrilla Gardeners in Caglary.

The After Thought Art Society's monthly Artist get-together and critique night is on Thursday, March 27th at Emmedia (2nd floor, 351 11 Ave. S.W.) from 7:00pm to 10:00pm.

This month, Melanie Aikenhead has a special media presentation for us all. If you have work you want to discuss or show to the group, or simply want to mingle with artsy people come join us. Popcorn will be provided for the show, so don't miss it.

Fist up, a quick series of aerial shots of Nezahualcoyotl, a Mexican municipality just off Mexico City. It has a population of over a million people in an area of 63.44 km².

Next up is a collection of movie posters for all the previous (79) Academy Award "Best Picture" winners. It's an interesting way of seeing the evolution of the poster (and if you want to win best picture, be sure to have 1-3 people looking stoic on your poster)

November Crit Night

The November Crit Night is being held at EMMEDIA (#203, 351-11 Avenue SW,) Tuesday the 20th, 6-9:00pm.

Everyone is welcome! We encourage participants to come with finished artwork, work-in-progress, sketches and ideas, or curios and books/articles to share with the group. Or just bring yourself and join the discussion. The crit nights are potluck events, so snacks and/or beverages are also encouraged (but not required).

fuzzy tanks

I recently came across artist Lisa Solomon (via whipup.net) and was intrigued by her felt tank installation. She also has some wonderful installation pieces involving crocheted doilies. Solomon likes to combine elements that are not typically associated with each other (like the brightly coloured, soft felt tanks). She's one of those artists with lots going on including a personal blog, an online shop, an online book club(to which she is one of five contributors). Lots to take in, so enjoy!

I recently came across New York artist, Ann Wood. I first discovered her little bird figures while perusing craft blogs. From there, I stumbled onto her absolutely gorgeous paper and fabric ships. What a treat they are?! Her One Hundred Horses project was also interesting. Anyway, I found her work refreshing and quirky and I've been following her blog ever since.

I will be opening the gallery for only one weekend a month in which it will focus on revolving art work by young artists and bringing spectacular, original art out to the burbs.

Check out Dutch artist Theo Jansen and his kinetic sculptures. Pretty neat! I love the way his creatures move. It's a strange way to talk about one's art (as new life forms), but you can see how it seems to apply to what he's doing.
